We all know having a great leadership team at any company is important to be successful. But where do these leaders come from? Leaders do not magically appear with the skills to be successful. Leaders and future leaders must be taught the needed skills, then continue to develop the kills they have already learned. To help develop Crescent’s current and future leaders we hold monthly leadership training sessions. These training sessions are geared toward specific leadership skills that are needed for us to be successful as leaders and as a company. People that attend the sessions have a wide range of skill levels. For some attendees it’s learning a new concept, while for others it’s a reinforcement to what they already know. A key aspect of this training is that the responsibility to teach rotates through the group that attends the session. This allows for communication development, leadership growth for the person teaching, and establishes unity in the group as they support those that are teaching.

No leader is perfect and leaders must continue to improve. In addition to the monthly leadership sessions it is important for the group to give professional feedback on how situations were handled; both positive and negative. Doing this ensures our leaders and future leaders constantly improve their skills and can anticipate the outcomes as a result of their actions. Many companies have the mindset that they don’t have the time or resources to develop current and future leaders. Another mindset is that if they train their leaders too well, they will leave. These mindsets will hold a company back from success now and in the future. Not investing in People to develop leadership will directly impede a company from being successful short and long term. The cost of development of current and future leadership is insignificant when compared to the cost of failure.
